The miniature floats
SALVATORE TORNABENE (Cat. B)
UN MARE D'AMARE
With this work, I would like to address the issue of illegal fishing, which has become widespread and is often left unpunished. Every year, between 8 and 14 million tons of illegally caught fish are sold worldwide. This parallel market is therefore worth between 9 and 17 billion dollars. According to the FAO, illegal fishing includes activities carried out without a license as well as those that violate national and international regulations. It extends to all types and sizes of fishing gear and can occur both in international waters and in areas of national jurisdiction. Illegal fishing has serious economic and ecological consequences, such as a reduction in fish populations, a strong impact on marine ecosystems, and harm to protected species.
China is the superpower of fishing, with the largest fishing fleet in the world. Chinese fishing boats operating in the central Pacific are the most numerous, causing significant damage by plundering everything the seas have to offer. At the front of the float, we see a Chinese fisherman holding a fishing rod, trying to plunder fish by catching everything, even a mermaid. The mermaid, with her melodious song, attracts fishermen and sailors, leading them to wreck their ships on the rocks, making them land and devour them. Right behind, we find the rose of the winds with the four winds, which blow and stir the sea, trying to prevent fishermen from engaging in illegal activity. At the back of the float, we find Poseidon, the god of the seas and rivers, the creator of storms and floods. Tired of his sea being constantly exploited, with the force of his trident, he decides to strike out against everything and everyone to restore balance and tranquility to his world.
The work aims to send a message of awareness about the sea, because if this continues, our seas will become increasingly devoid of fish species, and the marine environment will lose its beauty and biodiversity.
