The miniature floats
FLAVIO E FEDERICO DI MAURO (Cat. B)
S.O.S. POLO NORD - SUD
We are two brothers, aged 14 and 7, with a great passion for the Carnival of Acireale and its magnificent papier-mâché floats.
We decided to participate in the "miniature floats" contest with our work titled: "S.O.S. POLO NORD-SUD".
The theme of our work addresses the issue of "Global Warming" and its catastrophic consequences, such as the melting of glaciers, rising sea levels, droughts, and more.
The work represents a cry for help (S.O.S.) to the adults whose actions are destroying our planet, thereby jeopardizing our very future: "man is playing with fire".
At the front, we wanted to create a penguin typical of the South Pole, sipping a tropical cocktail while playing soccer with a seal that begins to sweat. Behind them, we have a polar bear, typical of the North Pole, spending its time surfing rather than hunting for survival. Behind the bear is a glacier that is melting, just as it is happening in reality. All the characters are dominated by the figure of a man who is becoming increasingly insensitive to the consequences of his actions on Earth, transforming into a robot. With one hand, he plays with fire, and with the other, he plays with the Earth, which is suffering the effects of his actions.
The float will be created using the traditional papier-mâché technique. The composition will come to life through movements powered by special systems and lighting effects. The float will feature a state-of-the-art lifesaving device, LED lighting, and strobe lights.
The main movements of the float will be:
Left-right movement for the penguin and the seal.
A 360-degree rotation for the ball.
The bear will move up and down.
The glacier will move left-right to simulate its breaking.
The man will be raised by a piston, his arms will move up and down, and his face will rotate left and right.
The Earth will rotate in a 360-degree motion.
The work complies with all the rules set out by the competition guidelines.
